- <p> DIED. Samuel Stratton, 73, one of the few pro-defense
- Democratic Congressmen in the mold of Senator Henry Jackson;
- of a heart attack; in Gaithersburg, Md. As a champion of U.S.
- involvement in the Vietnam War and of the B-1 bomber and the
- MX missile, Stratton was at war with many of his Democratic
- colleagues in the House. But during his three decades in
- Congress, the upstate New Yorker hewed to the orthodox liberal
- line on many issues, supporting school busing and economic
- sanctions against South Africa.
